“Looking through the eyes of young London” – London Mix at Terminal 5

Watermans

Photocall to come and meet some of the participants and creators, Heathrow Terminal 5 Departure Hall, Monday 2 February @ 9.30am

Watermans is delighted to announce that London Mix, its exciting participatory public art project is to be showcased at London’s Heathrow Airport in the departure hall of Terminal 5, for 6 weeks starting from Thursday 29 January.

With the spotlight on London in the lead up to the Olympic Games, last year young Londoners were invited to look beyond the picture-postcard image and to create ideas that would share their city with the world.

300 young people from 6 West London boroughs worked with 5 artists to produce a vibrant series of animations, films and photographs.

This installation has been specially designed for Heathrow Terminal 5 to illustrate the work that was created.  Over half a million people will have the opportunity to see it.

Jan Lennox, Director of Watermans said: “This collaboration offers Watermans a terrific opportunity to highlight the creative spirit of young Londoners. Being able to install this project in one of London’s leading gateways means a large and diverse audience will have the opportunity to experience what has been created”

London Mix at Terminal 5 is part of the EXPO initiative at the airport, which showcases the best of UK culture and commerce, through a range of events and ‘experiences’.

Charles Byrne of BAA said “London Mix is exactly the sort of activity we want to showcase through the Expo programme. London is a great and diverse city and Heathrow has its role to play in supporting this. We are delighted to be working with Watermans and look forward to developing this theme in the build up to the Olympics”

London Mix was funded by London Councils as part of their 2012 cultural activities programme.

Chair of London Councils’ Grants Committee Councillor Lynne Hillan said: “It is always a great pleasure to see one of our funded groups going on to achieve such success. The Waterman’s project actively engaged young people with cultural activities around the Olympics, and London Councils is pleased to continue supporting their efforts in bringing young people together to celebrate the capital in the run up to 2012.”

London Mix was conceived by Watermans and was produced by Watermans in collaboration with award winning arts organisation motiroti, which specialises in multi-layered projects led by participation and collaboration.

Design and concept for Terminal 5 is by Ali Zaidi and Juan Ramon Veloza. The video edit is by Steve Folorunsho and the fabrication by Model Solutions.
