Boxing sensation Amir Khan along with ten other budding sports stars are celebrating, following their success at the biggest ever Asian sports awards in the country.

The winners of the prestigious Change4Life British Asian Sports awards were revealed at a star-studded ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel in Park Lane on Saturday 6th February. Hosted by ‘Eastender’ Nitin Ganatra and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star Laila Rouass, the awards show once again recognised the contributions and achievements of the best in British Asian Sporting talent.

BASA awards ambassador Amir Khan was honoured with the Here & Now Champagne Moment of the Year award. He said: “Every time I win an award, I get the same feeling as when I first won one. It feels great to win the Champagne Moment of the year. Last year I became world champion so it was a really good year for me. There were some really strong contenders at the awards and I have respect for all the nominees.”

England women’s cricketer, Isa Guha was also celebrating after winning the Change4Life Sports Personality of the year award. She was recognised for becoming an established England International cricketer and playing an integral role as a member of the World Cup Winning team last year.

She said: “Today’s ceremony was amazing! There were so many strong contenders up for this award and so I am truly humbled to have received it. I would like to thank the Change4Life British Asian Sports Awards for giving myself and others a platform to showcase our talent. It’s been a great year for women in sport and I hope that this award can inspire more women to get actively involved in sports.”

This year’s awards were partnered for the first time with Change4Life, the groundbreaking movement which supports families to ‘eat well, move more and live longer. The British Asian Sports Awards partnership with Change4Life aims to increase awareness of the importance of eating well and moving more amongst the South Asian community, where some obesity related illnesses, such as type 2 Diabetes, are higher than the national average.

Other winners on the night also included Sri Lankan cricketer, Arjuna Ranatunga, who picked up the Astra Lifetime Achievement Award and Amit Bhatia, the Vice-Chairman of QPR who was crowned winner of the Emerald Knight Community Business in Sport award.

The evening featured show-stopping performances from MOBO award-winning rapper, Chipmunk, popular girl band The Saturdays, and talented British Asian pop singers and Navin Kundra. High profile guests in attendance included Denise Lewis, Olympic Gold Medallist and BASA judge, actors Colin Salmon, Nina Wadia and politicians Keith Vaz MP and Sion Simon MP.

The charity auction on the night raised thousands of pounds for The British Asian Trust. The event will be broadcast globally on Sony Entertainment Television Asia in April 2010

 U.K stars graced the red carpet at the BASA awards last night held at the  Grosvenor House Hotel and Desimag was there to bring you all the action live from the red carpet.

A-lister Colin Salmon (best known for his roles in the James Bond films as Charles Robinson) was in attendance with his date and needed no guidance or introductions as they made their way in.  

 It was a family affair for Eastenders stars Nitin Ganatra (Masood), Nina Wadia (Zainab) and Himesh Patel (Tamwar) who walked the carpet together along with a very sexy John Partridge (Christian). The group were very playful with the press and even cracked a few jokes as they walked into the award ceremony.  

Also in attendance were some very beautiful women including Laila Rouass (best known for her role as amber in footballer’s wives) who looked amazing in a mid rif baring sari. I was like a kid in a candy store (having watched her on tv growing up). Laila was as gorgeous and elegant as ever, taking time to pose for pictures with fans even when she was being dragged away (we salute you).   

Miss Universe UK 2008 winner Lisa Lazarus proved she was worthy of the title looking like a doll (I mean literally) in her pretty gown playfully giggling and chatting. You could feel her presence as soon as she walked into the building!   

Olympic medalist, boxer Amir Khan needed no introduction as he made his way in wearing a suit and squinting his eyes away from the flashes (which we all laughed at) He gave us a few boxing poses and drove the girls wild with his alpha male stance. May I add he smelt really good too!

 The loudest entrance came from 19 year old Chipmunk who got us having our ‘Cs up’ as he entered the building all dressed in black with an entourage. The teenager commanded attention and let the press know that he was in control when they shouted at him too much telling them “look I’m starting from here and working my way down) which had everybody in stitches. He moved with that hip hop swagger and kindly took his shades off when asked which led to girls swooning over his eyes (if only I was 19 again)….

Future stars Jaya (first British Asian female singer to be signed to a major label – Universal) and Katy Shotter who was signed by Beyonce’s father Matthew Knowles giving her the chance to perform with Bey last year strutted their stuff and looked like they were already used to life in the limelight.   

Singer Navin Kundra caused a storm when he strolled in with not one but two dates as accessories and flashed cheeky grins at us as we all teased him for attending with the mystery ladies.   

Girl band The Saturdays did arrive for the awards ceremony but couldn’t walk the red carpet because they were “getting their make-up done” at which point I remembered how over rated I thought they were!   

 All in all the night looked set to be a star studded event with plenty of laughs and cheekiness.

Robinho, the most expensive player in British football, has announced that he expects to leave Manchester City to rejoin Santos on loan this week.

Ashton says Robinho wants to leave because there is a very real possibility that he could miss out on a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad this summer.

Chlesea only got 2 wins from their last 8 games in all competitions, and even the one over Portsmouth I wouldn’t count on (Pompey are at the foot of the table and it was only a 2-1 win, with the winner scored from the spot some 10 minutes before the final whistle).

In other words, the win over Fulham was their only good result in the last month, and I suspect if Fulham didn’t lose their concentration for a couple of minutes Chelsea would not have been able to win that one either.

DesiMag: How did it feel to K.O Salati in 76 seconds?

Amir: Great! All that training I’ve been doing for10-12 weeks paid off and it finishes in the first round, 10 weeks for all that! It’s kinda hard.

In this game  you have to train full time hours not knowing when the fight is going to finish,  in the first, second, third or twelfth round, so you can’t predict any fight. People were saying to me you should have let the fight last longer! When you fight with somebody who gets hurt in the first round, you gotta finish him off and that’s what I did?

DesiMag: When you knock out someone in the first 76 seconds, can you remember the exact feeling you had, were you surprised? 

Amir: I was more shocked more then anyone, it happened within the 76 seconds, you know when your just getting in to the fighting, you throw a few punches but when  the timing is not there, I didn’t expect him to go out, but it was just perfect, I hit him and he was gone! Yeah I was quite surprised.

DesiMag: Are you based in the States in L.A (USA) now?  

Amir: I still live in Bolton in UK, but I train in L.A, I spend 5 months a year over there, for training.

DesiMag: Do you find it difficult to travel from UK to USA? 

Amir: The main thing about travelling to USA is that there are no distractions there, so I’m totally focused. When you’re focused, you can traine harder and its better beacuse you can put your mind to it.

DesiMag: Who inspires you? 

Amir: Mohammad Ali, looking at his videos and the way he use to be, the way he use to fight, I think hes the main inspiration of my career , I just want to be like him, I follow his foot steps even if its half of what he did.

  
DesiMag: What do you think about X Boxer Naseem Hamid?

 
Amir: Great guy, Nas is a great friend of mine, and hes always at my fights, i think he’s re-living his moment everytime he see’s me win. I think its nice for him to be there, he shows his support, hes a great guy, I use to watch his fights, I was a big fan of Naz and now he comes to my fights and he’s a fan of me. It’s amazing to see how times changes.

DesiMag: Naseem Hamid use to make a grand entry when he would enter the ring, there would be music playing in the background people excited? 

Amir: Yeah I know, He was great to watch, Naz’s entry use to be very exciting. I use to be there when he would be fighting in the ring. 

 DesiMag: Would we ever see Amir Khan flip into the ring, doing somersaults etc?

Amir: I’m too scared, i might fall over (laughs)….Naz and me were two different personalities Naz is very flamboyant, lively and me, I’m quiet, walks in the ring, does the job and walks about.

DesiMag: Will you be ever fighting Prescott again?

Amir: I’d love to fight him again. We tried to get that fight back on, even though he got beaten by a friend of mine Kevin Ritchie, I’d fight him just to shut the critics up! It was more of a lucky punch, it was a mistake that was made in the fight. It happened so quick, it just shows that one punch can kill your fight. I just want to tell my fans that it was a mistake i made, he was the better man on the night and so he won!

DesiMag: When will we see you next in the ring?

Amir: My next fight, were looking towards is around March.

DesiMag: Will that be in the UK or America?

Amir: We’re still in talks, It could be the first fight over there.

DesiMag: We have heard you are quite set to fight in Las Vegas?

Amir: Yeah, Definitely one of the best boxing venues out there,its my dream, Vegas and Madisson Square Gardens, this is where Mohammed Ali use to fight there, the idea of your names up in lights, figters like Mohammed Ali, Manny Pakial they have all fighted over there, so its something to look forward to in the near future.

DesiMag: I am going to read you this quote taken from ”The Sun and The Guardian” this statement is from fellow boxer Paul Mc Closkey “ Khan is a very good young fighter, but I have fought better boxers in my last 8 fights, I’d be very confident going into a fight against him”!If you were to say something back what would you say?

Amir: I’d say he’s a fighter who has no skills, Paul has no power, he cant even break an egg. (Laughs) When people use your name they use it to get some publicity for themselves. I have had better opponents in the whole of my boxing career then Paul, “ He needs to touch my level”!

McCluskey is a nodody, he needs to prove himself before he gets to my level.

DesiMag: When do you want to retire?

Amir: I think around 28, call it a day then. Boxing is a short career, oce you hit your your peak, i think ill hit my peak at 24. Once you hit your peak you can decide where you are in Boxing, then you know when you can call it a day. I think i will reach it well before 30.

DesiMag: How do you stay so grounded, you’re known as a passionate boxer at an International level, growing stronger after every fight?

Amir: In my life I have been brought up like that, I keep my family close to me, they advise me, I accept the boxing, I really think I’m something inside the ring but when I’m outside the ring, I don’t think like that, I’m just a normal guy outside the ring, I don’t think I will ever change, I’m just like any other young guy.

DesiMag: Your supporters have dubbed you to be King Khan, usually King Khan is associated with the Bollywood Film Industry, actors such as Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, and now it’s you. How does that make your feel?

Amir: Giggles in joy. It feels amazing, like when I see sky box office I see myself as King Khan, they make programmes on you, your whole career I never ever comment. You do the right job you do the right thing; you win the right fights you get the support which just makes you want to work harder at it.

DesiMag: Taking you away from boxing now, can you tell us what else do you do?

Amir: I’m a normal guy, do things with my family I take my niece out, I even take them to school sometimes, so yeah, I’m a normal guy, do everything normal people do. Laughs…

DesiMag: Do you watch any Bollywood films?

Amir: I went out for bit of a laugh, I went out with my friends thought I’d give it a try, yeah. The last one i saw was an old one.

DesiMag: Do you get any pressure form your friends’ family or coach?

Amir: Having your close family around you from day one, you keep close, it keeps your image clean as well.

DesiMag: All the girls want to know the big question are you single?

Amir: My boxing career comes first, not looking at the moment totally focussed on boxing. 100% focussed on boxing.

So girls, their is some hope still…but not till he’s retired at sweet 28!

Floyd Mayweather Jr’s camp claim the American’s planned super fight with Manny Pacquiao is now “in jeopardy

Mayweather and the Filipino star were close to agreeing a 13 March meeting.

But the American’s camp say they have been told by Pacquiao’s promoters that he will not agree to blood-testing in the 30 days prior to the fight.

“He, Pacquiao, would only agree to have blood drawn before the kick-off press conference and after the fight,” said Mayweather associate Richard Schaefer.

“It is unfortunate to hear this from Manny Pacquiao’s representatives, particularly since, as of today, both parties had worked out all other issues related to this fight.”

Unbeaten Mayweather’s management want both men – regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world – to submit to blood-testing prior to the bout, to ensure both men are clean.

Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher announces his return to the sport by signing for Mercedes

The German, who will be 41 on 3 January, was unveiled at the Mercedes factory in Brackley, Northamptonshire.

Schumacher will partner compatriot Nico Rosberg in the team that won the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2009 in its former guise as Brawn.

“After three years I have the energy back and I’m ready for some serious stuff,” said Schumacher.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC he added: “I’m very motivated, thrilled and excited.

“I want to have fun out there and I feel as fresh as ever. I’ve recharged myself after a three-year break.

“The challenge is what I look for – I want to know it.”

Schumacher retired at the end of 2006 but will now return to the sport he dominated after signing a three-year deal with Mercedes.

He will reportedly earn £6.2m after signing up to reunite with Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, who masterminded all seven of his titles, the first two with Benetton in 1994-5 and the subsequent five with Ferrari from 2000-4.

Schumacher was forced to call off a planned temporary comeback as a stand-in for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in the summer because of a neck injury sustained in a motorcycle accident last February.

But Schumacher recently underwent medical checks and is confident he is back to full fitness.

“I wouldn’t have entered all of this if I wasn’t confident,” Schumacher explained.

“That confidence comes from some serious training with my neck to make sure it can withstand what it couldn’t in the summer.

“There is no further issue with the neck – 100%.
