In a unique promotional initiative, leading film major, Studio 18 has collaborated with the Leeds-based publication, Asian Express National newspaper, to release a special issue of Rann Times UK-wide.

Produced by Sheetal Vinod Talwar and Madhu Mantena of Ghajini and directed by the maverick, Ram Gopal Varma, Rann top-lines the legendary superstar Amitabh Bachchan with a well-known ensemble cast comprising Riteish Deshmukh, Sudeep, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Rajat Kapoor, and a host of others.

Bachchan’s character (Vijay Harshwardhan Malik) plays a media baron in the controversial film, which takes a bold and entertaining look at the fierce war between news channels, which drives them to the extent of “creating” sensational and often dangerous news, in order to grab viewership.

Remarks Ram Gopal Varma, “The way the news is presented today is much more entertaining than family soaps and thrillers. What’s worse is that we enjoy this kind of presentation.”

In keeping with the film’s theme of Bachchan playing a reel-life news editor, the makers have created a special 12-page newspaper called Rann Times, which features candid and hard-hitting interviews with the film’s talent, including Mr. Bachchan

MTV’S “TRUE LIFE” EXPLORES EXTREME GAMBLING ADDICTIONS, THE LIVES OF HOMESCHOOLED TEENS & “FANBOYS” IN THREE NEW EPISODES PREMIERING SATURDAY, JANUARY 9 AT 2PM ET/PT

MTV’s Emmy award-winning series “True Life” returns in the New Year with three original episodes that explore different subcultures of American youth, from gambling addicts with serious consequences to students who forgo a life packed classrooms and homeroom teachers for an education from home to passionate young people whose fantasy worlds become their realities. Each new episode premiering January 9 from 2-5pm ET/PT, including “True Life: I’m A Gambler,” “True Life: I’m Homeschooled,” and “True Life: I’m A Fanboy,” will give viewers a unique glimpse inside these young people’s lives.

“TRUE LIFE: I’M A GAMBLER” premieres at 2pm ET/PT

Whether betting on sports, black jack, or online poker, many of us enjoy the occasional chance to turn loose change into mad money. But for nine million Americans — gambling is a dangerous preoccupation that is causing massive debt, damaged relationships, and even jail time. On this episode of “True Life,” viewers will meet three young people whose gambling habits have become an obsession that is changing their lives forever.

“TRUE LIFE: I’M HOMESCHOOLED” premieres at 3pm ET/PT

Is going to public or private school one of the essential experiences of youth? For the two million young Americans who are educated at home every year – the answer can be complicated. On this edition of “True Life,” three homeschoolers tell their story as they struggle with their decision to take this unconventional road to a high school diploma.   They might not have to deal with teachers, peer pressure or lunchroom mystery meat, but the obstacles they face at home can be even greater.

“TRUE LIFE: I’M A FANBOY” premieres at 4pm ET/PT

At one point or another, many of us might fall in love with a work of pop culture — a movie, a video game, or maybe a comic book character. However, if your enthusiasm goes over the edge and becomes all-consuming, then you have crossed over into fanboy territory. In this episode of “True Life,” meet three young people whose passion for their geeked-out hobbies is so intense, it’s completely taken over their lives. They eat, sleep and breathe their fandom. They must determine if this devotion will help them achieve their goals or just get in the way.

Four ‘Regular’ Guys Journey Across the Country Asking One Question: “What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?”‪

New York, NY (December 17, 2009) –MTV gives viewers an adventure of a lifetime in an epic cross-country journey, where anything is possible, in the new series “The Buried Life” premiering Monday, January 18 at 10PMET/PT.

This documentary series follows Duncan, Ben, Jonnie and Dave, who travel across the country in their purple bus named Penelope to pursue their wildest aspirations and sometimes “off the wall” crusades to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

As the cameras roll, the guys trek through the country crossing off items on their list of “100 things to do before they die.” The list includes everything from playing basketball with President Obama and attending a party at the Playboy Mansion to paying off their parents’ mortgages and giving a million dollars to a worthy cause.

Along the way, the guys make a promise that for each item they cross off their list, they will help a perfect stranger accomplish one of their goals, challenging each person they meet with the ultimate question – “what do YOU want to do before you die?”

Fans will get to know Duncan, who is a bit of a wild card with a heart of gold; Ben, the ringleader who will do whatever it takes to get things done; Jonnie, Duncan’s younger brother, who is a blogger and philosopher, and with whom girls seem to fall in love; and Dave, the break-dancer and “one-man party” who is up for anything. With the help of MTV, Duncan, Ben, Jonnie and Dave just crossed #53 off their list: start a television show.

Three years ago, “The Buried Life” began when Duncan, Ben, Dave and Jonnie, disillusioned about what lay ahead for the future of their generation, decided to make a list of everything they wanted most in life.

The guys also promised they would help others achieve their own life goals — which has included reuniting a father and son who haven’t spoken in 17 years, helping a young woman who lost her mother in Hurricane Katrina travel to her grave site for the first time, rewarding students they met by donating computers to a low-income school in Los Angeles, and more. The title “The Buried Life” was inspired by a poem written by Matthew Arnold in 1852 in which he suggests that day-to-day minutia often buries our real lives and we each have a desire to live our “Buried Life.”

Ali Bastian booted from Strictly!

Ali Bastian said she was “going out on a high” as she and her partner Brian Fortuna were voted off Strictly Come Dancing tonight.

Hearing the result, the 26-year-old said: “We are going out on the most tremendous high and it has been the most incredible journey and I have loved every minute of it.”

Danyl Johnson voted off X-Factor

Schoolteacher Danyl Johnson has been voted off ITV’s X-Factor, missing out on a place in the show’s final.

Olly Murs, 25, burst into tears when hearing he had made it though. He will face Joe McElderry, 18, and 20-year-old mother Stacey Solomon in the finals.

Johnson’s mentor Simon Cowell said: “There was nothing more he could have done. He’s gone out on a high. He’s a gracious loser.”

“I have met some best friends for life,” Johnson, 27, said.

He said he now planned to catch up with friends and family and play “a couple of gigs”.

On Saturday night’s show, the final four each sang one Michael Jackson song and were able to choose another song which they felt would secure them a place in the final.

Bollywood actress Shamita Shetty walked out of reality show Bigg Boss 3 to be with her elder sister Shilpa who is tying the knot with millionaire beau Raj Kundra November 22.

Shamita’s voluntary exit will be aired on the reality show Saturday.

“I am just so excited about Shilpa’s wedding. Family comes first for me, so I couldn’t help but come out of the show to be with her,” Shamita said.

Charlie Clements leaves EastEnders

EastEnders star Charlie Clements has announced his decision to quit the soap.

The actor, who has played sweet-natured Bradley Branning since 2006, is set to leave in what show bosses promise will be a “big exit”.

It is thought his departure could play out as part of the show’s 25th anniversary celebrations in February.

Charlie said: “I have been at EastEnders for nearly four years now and I have enjoyed every minute of it but as an actor I feel that now is the time to move on take on some new roles.”
