Celebrations of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday

crowdFirst wide-scale celebrations of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday took place.

Several thousands young people throughout the UK celebrated the Prophets birthday.

Suras and ayats from Quran and prayers dedicated to Prophet Muhammad were read in all mosques around the uk while many families celebrated at home.

This day unites us, the day that makes us check if our thoughts, actions and plans meet the Koran’s requirements and Prophet Muhammad’s teaching,” Hussain Rafiq (London)

In Cornwall there were several gatherings on Sunday March 8th, where traditional Muslims as well as new converts gathered to celebrate this occasion known as Mawlid or Milaad-an Nabi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spent time with 40 Muslim school students on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad-ud-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed, at his residence in India.

Yesterday in Slough the March and the local mosque was filled with mehfils and happiness and peace surrounded the area.

In Peterborough, the houseS were decorated with lights and Khatam’s took place in homes with food freshly made, family gatherings and peaceful atmospheres.

This occasion is used by Muslims to remind themselves and others of the significance of the life of the Prophet (p. b. u. h.), his teachings, and his life example.

Faced with a different cultural atmosphere and often-differing value system in their host countries, immigrant Muslims who live in non-Muslim countries find it particularly important to use this occasion for introducing Prophet Muhammad (p. b. u. h.) as an ideal role model to the younger generation.

A typical Mawlid celebration starts by the recitation of a few verses of the Quran, followed by talks and poetry readings in honour of the Prophet (p. b. u. h.). A free dinner is then served, followed by more talks and poetry readings. Mawlid is also an occasion to send blessings collectively on the soul of the Prophet (p. b. u. h.) and God asks believers to do the same. By sending blessings on his soul, believers are obeying God and thereby pleasing Him so that they get blessings on themselves in return.

This is another reason, and for some the most important reason, why such a celebration should take place. The whole atmosphere is happy and festive, yet reverential, and attendants usually leave with a renewed sense of love and reverence for the Prophet (p. b. u. h.), and a desire to emulate him in their lives.
