

We Caught up with Pakistani Pop Princess, Hadiqa Kiani who is releasing hernew album ”Aasman” this year. Lets found out more about what she’s up to and more about the album!
DESIMAG: In what year did you start your career as a Pakistani singer?
Hadiqa: Early 90s (officially my first album was released in 96)
DESIMAG: Tell us more about you’re music, you’re very well known in the UK and around the world too, who are your main influences?
Hadiqa: My music keeps evolving with time, have lot of influences as I grew up listening 2 beegees, Olivia Newton john, donna summer, pink floyd, ,carpenters etc and over the years not forgetting whitney Houston, u2, Bonnie ratt, Sheryl crow, tori amos, alanis moressete and now a days I listen 2 different types of music (world music, RnB etc).
Other than the western music influences, I really like listening 2 the classical singers like Ustad salamat ali khan (of sham chorasee gharana),Roshan ara begum, and Pundit Ajoy Chikorbarti, folk singers like Tufail niazi and Abida Perveen, ghazal singers like Mehdi hassan and Fareeda Khanam, Qawwals like nusrat fateh ali khan and Sabri brothers, play back singers like Kishor Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Madam Noor Jehan ( specially her old songs and ghazals), Pop singers like Nazia Hassan, Mile Stones and vital signs.
DESIMAG: Tell us about‘boohey barian’ which was a huge mega success in the UK, and remained in the UK charts for a long time?
Hadiqa: ”Boohey Barian” was written by my mother so its quite precious 2 me
it was a phenomenon and there was no specific theory behind it. Irfan composed it when I sung this song in the studio Irfan liked my 1st take after that just for my satisfaction I gave few more vocal takes but in the end we both approved the 1st one as it just touch our hearts.

After that I came up with my rung album and did few experiments…I always believe that one should be true to ones self and keep exploring and evolving.. I also did an alternative rock english album “rough Cut”, with the music maestro Aamir zaki and I loved the experience of the whole project.
DESIMAG: You shot the video “Mehr Ma” in 2006 with the awesome UK based music producer and song lyricist Khiza, how did you first meet Khiza?
Hadiqa: I met khiza through a common friend of Irfan and me “Zab Khan” (from the BBC). I have always loved working with him.
DESIMAG: Full name and where are you from in Pakistan?
Hadiqa: Hadiqa kiani; I’m 4rm Rawalpindi, there were few hardships but I had full support of my family all the way Mashallah and I feel blessed.
DESIMAG: Are you related to anyone in the music industry?
Hadiqa: Nope I’m not related 2 any1 in the music scene except 4 my brother whose a gr8 musician!
DESIMAG: Have you performed outside of Pakistan, If so which countries?
Hadiqa: Yea I have: America, Canada, UK, Australia, Norway, Japan, China, Brunei, Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, Dubai, Bulgaria and India.
DESIMAG: Has your life changed since you have become a singer?
Hadiqa: Obviously life changes when you enter in any profession and it demands hard work and dedication…so yes being a singer, it requires time and attention but the best part is that I love what I’m doing and enjoy my work as a musician;)
DESIMAG: Which Artist’s would you like to work with in the future?
Hadiqa: I haven’t planned it yet but definitely would love 2 do collaborate with Irfan (lala) again and also my sister Sasha
DESIMAG: How do your lyrics reflect on your life, is there a deeper message you wish to portray?
Hadiqa: Of course lyrics of my albums reflect my life and my emotions…
DESIMAG: What is your level of education? Do you consider education to be important in life and how has this helped you in you’re music career as a singer?
Hadiqa: I’m masters in psychology and I guess that has helped me 2 know people on a deeper level. I believe education is v. important 2 help get 2 know who u r and what u want in life.
DESIMAG: Where do you see your career as a singer in next 3 years?
Hadiqa: I believe in living in the Moment
DESIMAG: For a female vocalist you are a versatile singer, you have your own unique melodic voice. How many languages can you sing in altogether & can I add; you’re Punjabi is really sweet.
Hadiqa: Well thnx 4 your appreciationJ I can sing in Urdu, Punjabi, Saraiki, Pushto, Kashmiri (Dogri), and Balochi. Other than our regional languages, I have sung in Malay, Turkish, Chinese, Arabic, Persian and English.
DESIMAG: ‘Aasmaan’ has been release, tell desimag.co.uk what the album is about, and have you shoot any video’s for this?
Hadiqa: My album ‘Aasmaan’ has been released on the 17th of June 2009, it’s an RnB album with a few dance tracks. I have shot 4 videos.
DESIMAG: What is you’re biggest achievement to date? We are aware of the fact that you are the brand ambassador of Soul Collections who have produced the world’s first reversible shoe, how does that make you feel?
Hadiqa: I was honoured by one of the highest civil Awards of my country i.e Tamga-i-Imtaz by the govt of Pakistan.Soul Collections is a gr8 brand and I’m proud 2 be a part of such a high quality company. I had been a brand Ambassador for various brands in the past such as Pepsi, Lipton, Sunsilk , PEL, Ponds (currently ), LG-Mobiles (currently)
DESIMAG: What do you fear the most in life?
Hadiqa: Loosing my loved ones!

DESIMAG: Name 5 things you consider to be your biggest strength? Do you believe in God?
Hadiqa: What do u mean do I believe in God???????
1. Of course! God is my biggest strength

DESIMAG: Name 5 of you’re weaknesses’?
Hadiqa: Oohhhhh there are loads so that’s quite n easy question!
1. I’m not a social person
2. I can never tell a joke but can always enjoy one.
3. When I’m feeling low I go in my shell
4. Can’t sleep when I have an early flight
5. Tears don’t come out that easy
DESIMAG: What is your star sign? & do you believe in luck & destiny?
Hadiqa: I’m a LeoJ I believe in a positive state of mind and strongly believe in the universal energies
DESIMAG: Could you tell your fans a bit more about your son Naadey Ali, does he show signs of becoming a great singer like his mother?
Hadiqa: Well indeed he is showing me signs of loving music specially he loves 2 play drums I’m not gonna impose anything on 2 him and will let him be himself and support him no matter what Inshallah
DESIMAG: What projects are you currently involved in at present? Are you working alongside any major fashion designers?
Hadiqa: I’m 1 of the judges on LG(ABS) (1st student singing competition) along with The gr8 producer Nizar Lalani and a fantastic Music teacher Salamat Ali from National Academy of Performing Arts…I am recently signed as the brand ambassador of LG Gm-200 along with Shehzad Roy. I prefer designing clothes for myself along with my nephew, niece and bhabi.
DESIMAG: What’s you’re favourite dish, and favourite restaurant?
Hadiqa: Green Thai prawn curry or any nicely cooked food….. could be any restaurant.
DESIMAG: What is you’re idea of a perfect holiday?
Hadiqa: Well since I don’t do a 9 to 5 job so for me holiday seems like a funny idea;) any day when u can have fun eat, cook spend quality time with your family and have a big fat smile on your face

DESIMAG: When will you be next be performing in the Uk?
Hadiqa: Ill be touring soon Inshallah but regarding the dates I’m not sure
DESIMAG: You are to appear as a judge in a music Reality Show on GEO TV how were you approached for this?
Hadiqa: Wellllllllll!!!!!!!! I was approached through the (BBCL) a company who is producing the show 4 LG
